We are currently looking for a Process Safety Specialist based out of St. Thomas, ON

Our mission has started. Volkswagen Group’s largest cell factory in St. Thomas will carry out all battery activities – from processing raw materials to developing a unified Volkswagen battery to managing the European and North American gigafactories. As the Process Safety Specialist, you will be responsible for the provision of expert advice on all plant safety aspects to both the Equipment Planning teams and the Head of Health and Safety, as well as supporting the equipment procurement, design, approval, commissioning, and operational phases. This includes ensuring compliance with all relevant local and internal design requirements. You will also be responsible for coordination of all equipment safety assessments including HAZOP, PSR and Machinery Risk Assessments as well as supporting the whole HSE team on delivering their statutory duties and internal requirements.

This is a temporary flex hybrid model, requiring 2 days in the St. Thomas office. This is subject to change based on the needs of the project and will eventually be fully onsite.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordination and support of plant, process, fire, explosion and equipment safety during factory design/re-design, construction, commissioning and operation with engineering teams, suppliers and other relevant organizations
  • Coordinate and manage risk assessments and hazard evaluations for all production processes, including, but not limited to, HAZID, HAZOP, PSR, LOPA, SIL, SEVESO, ATEX and internal pre-start safety reviews.
  • Development, implement and management of strategies to mitigate identified process safety risks.
  • Ensure all processes safety equipment comply with all relevant Canadian regulations, including the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), the Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as internal PowerCo SE design requirements.
  • Support and take part in the factory acceptance and site acceptance assessments
  • Design, implement, and maintain safety management systems for process safety equipment. Regularly review and update safety procedures and policies
  • Preparation and review of safety-related documentation such as safety reports, expert opinions, statements
  • Provision of expert advice on Canadian safety regulations and standards relevant to manufacturing equipment in particularly related to the manufacture of Lithium-ion batteries and hazardous materials
  • Coordinate and manage the requirements for fire and explosion protection within process safety equipment
  • Incidents or near-miss assessments including root cause analysis, development of corrective actions and timely reporting in compliance with Canadian regulations and PowerCo SE requirements
  • Provision of training and guidance to staff on safety practices, emergency response, and compliance with Canadian safety standards on process manufacturing equipment
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external agencies to ensure alignment with safety objectives and regulatory requirements
  • Provision of expert support in the development of Health, Safety and Environmental emergency plans
  • Collaboration with the local Joint Health and Safety committee

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in process engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or safety engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in process safety within the advanced manufacturing, nuclear or chemical industry, including undertaking HAZID, HAZOP, PSR, LOPA, SIL, SEVESO, ATEX and internal pre-start safety reviews
  • Sound knowledge of the Canadian process equipment safety requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to collaborate and work cross-functionally
  • Task oriented with a sense of urgency whilst maintaining attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Business fluent English
  • Self-motivated and open minded to adapt to the fast changes associated with the ramp-up phase
  • Ability to travel up to ~10% of the time domestically and internationally
  • German language skills are considered an asset

Requirements for the position:

  • Must be able to enter / work within clean and dry room production areas
  • Must be wear full body clean and dry room clothing and PPE
  • Must be able to access elevated work areas through access platforms, ladders and stairs and lift up to 20 lbs on occasion
  • Must have no health restrictions working with chemicals
  • Must be able to undertake work in outdoor environments in all seasons
