This is an exciting opportunity to join the Cellular Pathology department at University Hospital Southampton. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who will be able to contribute to our histopathology reporting service by joining the surgical dissection team as well as assisting consultants in producing histology reports and contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings.

The UHS Cellular Pathology service is the regional specialist centre offering the largest and most comprehensive service in Wessex, delivering key diagnostic workstreams for patients within the Trust, GP / community services. This includes adult surgical pathology service (diagnostic biopsies/resections for all major specialities), diagnostic cytology service, paediatric and neuropathology, adult, peri-natal and paediatric post-mortem service, tissue handling for Molecular Pathology testing, local and regional MDTs, and referrals for specialist opinion across the network.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO

This is a post offering wide experience in all sub-specialist areas in adult histopathology. 

The successful candidate will undertake a range of duties under the supervision of Consultant Pathologists, to be agreed with at the first instance by the Clinical Lead team. These include the following:

·       Surgical dissection and reporting of all specimens, including cancer resection specimens. The reports will be issued with a Consultant, and during the course of training, independent reporting can be undertaken.

·       Attendance and contribution to MDT meetings.

·       Reporting non-gynaecological FNA specimens and attend clinics.

·       There can be the opportunity to contribute to the adult autopsy service.

·       Participation in clinical audit

·       Opportunities to contribute to undergraduate medical student pathology teaching.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

A doctor appointed to this grade:

·       Shall have full registration and Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council; and

·       Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or

·       Shall have equivalent experience and competencies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Specialty Doctors – England (2021)

Salary will be assessed in line with terms and conditions £52,530- £82,400

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Medical degree
  • GMC Registration
  • FRCPath Part 2
Desirable criteria
  • MD, MSc or PhD in Histopathology
  • Participation in Audit and Clinical Governance activity
  • Previous experience in an infection speciality

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 4 years post-graduate training in Histopathology

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Ability to work as part of a Multidisciplinary Team

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.
