The successful candidate will assist medical officers with collection of bone marrow samples, and prepare and stain bone marrow slides. 

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated ability or the ability to acquire knowledge of pathology sample preparation techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in medical procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or ability to acquire knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, pathology test names and required specimen types.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills including respectful behaviour, cooperation, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues and work productively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability or ability to acquire computer skills to use Auslab, Quality management system, Outlook and other data base programs used within the laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner with and without supervision within a team environment. Ability to prioritise workload to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour.

. Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • While no qualifications are mandatory, a Certificate in Pathology (Laboratory Assistance) or equivalent would be well regarded.
  • The role will be assisting medical officers in collection of bone marrows and must be comfortable in participating in medical procedures including the wearing of approriate PPE including N95 masks. The candidate must be able to perform the role professionally within a clinical setting.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
