Clinical Nurse Externs

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance was formed on July 1, 2003 as a partnership between Listowel Memorial Hospital and Wingham and District Hospital. We share a common management structure with one CEO. We have a commitment to partnership and common Mission, Vision and Values. The Alliance Board consists of both hospital boards combined. The Listowel Memorial Hospital has been providing acute care and complex continuing care services to the residents of North Perth and the hospital’s catchment area since 1919. Our fully accredited hospital offers a wide range of primary and secondary services including 24-hour emergency services. In-patient and out-patient care, specialist clinics and supportive diagnostic services. The Hospital has an active staff of 10 Family Practitioners as well as several consultant staff.
Hospital services include:

  • Emergency, Operating Rooms, Diagnostic and Ambulatory Care Units (December 2007)
  • Maternal/Newborn Unit
  • Diabetes/Nutrition Counseling
  • Speech-Language
  • Physiotherapy
  • Breast Health Centre
  • Fully integrated electronic patient health record with Family Health Team and Physician offices.

The Wingham and District Hospital is a modern, progressive acute care facility providing medical, surgical, obstetrical, paediatric, chronic and rehabilitation bed and other services, including 24-hour emergency coverage.
Hospital services include:
  • Emergency department with 24-hour on-call coverage
  • Rehabilitation department including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology
  • Multiple outpatient specialist clinics held on a regular basis to provide local service
  • Affiliation with London Regional Cancer Centre enabling chemotherapy treatment to be provided locally
  • Many community health related education programs
  • Fully integrated electronic patient health record with Family Health Team and Physician offices.

Position: Clinical Nurse Externs

Region: Huron and Perth

Description: The clinical nurse extern will work as an unregulated health care provider in multiple units within the hospital. Clinical nurse externs will work collaboratively with the unit nurses and allied health professionals under direct/or indirect supervision of registered nursing professionals. Externs may perform some (pre-identified) Controlled Acts authorized to nursing within the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario delegated to them under the supervision of a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them. The clinical nurse extern collaborates with the team to provide quality, patient-centered care.
This is a temporary position that is anticipated to begin immediately. The hours of work will vary based on the needs of theunit and applicant availability. Must be able to work some weekends andduring school vacation periods.
Responsibilities:

  • Assists patients with activities of daily living (personal care, toileting, feeding, etc.)
  • Assists with hourly rounding
  • Answering call bells, addressing patient concerns
  • Engages in additional skills via delegation as applicable and approved by unit leadership
  • Completes basic patient assessments in accordance with skill and level of completed nursing education
  • Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of nursing professionals within the unit of practice.
  • Ability to organize, problem solve, critical thinking and decision making.
  • Opportunity for exposure to additional clinical skills across all hospital units (oncology, surgical services, ambulatory care)
  • Communicates with patients, families, physicians, staff and community partners.
  • Observing and recording patient behavior. Evaluates patient outcomes.
  • Competent operation of some medical equipment
  • Must meet occupational health requirements

Qualifications:

  • Nursing learners who have completed a minimum their first full year of study and remain enrolled in a CNO approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Successful completion of recent clinical placement preferred
  • High degree of physical effort
  • High degree of mental effort and analysis

Salary: $20.60 per hour

Terms of Employment: Contract
