We are looking for junior doctors with strong clinical skills and knowledge who have career interest in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia. These positions may also be of interest to those pursuing careers in Emergency Medicine or Remote and Rural Medicine.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) and the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM) at the Royal Hobart Hospital offer prevocational positions as Basic Trainee’s in Acute Care. These consist of six months in Intensive Care and six months in Anaesthesia during the one-year tenure. Up to 6 positions are available if there are suitable applicants.

We are looking for doctors with strong clinical skills and knowledge with excellent communication skills, who have career interest in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Remote and Rural Medicine (ACCRM).
In ICU, Basic Trainees in Acute Care will work day and night shifts under the supervision of Consultant Intensivists and Senior Registrars. They are rostered with the general registrar pool and have similar duties. After hours, they are supported by ICU registrars working the same shifts and the on-call Senior Registrars and Consultants. They should expect to work regular rostered overtime, with up to 90-95 hours rostered per fortnight/pay period on occasion. Additionally, they may be rostered to our satellite private ICU for short periods. This ICU predominantly cares for high-risk perioperative cases. It admits cardiac surgical, thoracic, and neurosurgical cases, as well as other major perioperative cases. Medical admissions usually arrive via the emergency department. In this role, you will work directly under the supervision of a Consultant Intensivist.
In Anaesthesia, Basic Trainees in Acute Care work under supervision of a Specialist Anaesthetist within main theatres, the day procedure unit, the acute pain service and pre-admission clinics. They will work day and evening shifts with subsequent participation in the weekend after-hours roster when assessed as competent to do so. They also provide general duties in the pre-admission clinic for all surgical specialties approximately 1 day per week.
The RHH has a broad medical and surgical case mix including major trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, paediatric surgery and obstetrics.
Allocation of term order is determined by the two departments. These positions align with the REGISTRAR term dates, commencing 3 February 2025 – 2 February 2026.
Nb. These positions are not available to candidates who have previously held equivalent positions at RHH or elsewhere. Applications from those with extensive prior experience in ICU and/or anaesthesia will be reviewed to determine if suitable for this role, or if the candidate is better suited to a registrar position in either department. This determination will be at our discretion and is not open to negotiation.

It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change.
