Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and collection techniques are followed according to documented policies and procedures.

Your key responsibilities

You will be required to fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with the Queensland Public Service values.

  • Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
  • Collection of appropriate quality blood and non-blood specimens from clients of Pathology Queensland as per documented protocols.
  • Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and collection techniques are followed according to documented policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with patients, medical and non-medical staff in a professional manner to ensure correct collection and processing of specimens and efficient operation of the specimen collection department.
  • Perform operational duties which include restocking pathology consumables, maintaining clean work areas and assisting where directed.
  • Participate in relevant ongoing education and assist in staff training.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and behaviour when dealing with staff and clients.
  • Work with integrity, comply with expected ethical and behavioural standards, respect patient's confidentiality and know the importance of patient information.
  • Comply with NATA /ISO accreditation/certification requirements including the preparation of procedure manuals and completion of relevant statistics.
  • Comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations, and standards which impact upon the position including Queensland Health Code of Conduct, contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, such as workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination policy.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated experience or ability to acquire experience in the correct procedures of specimen collection/phlebotomy including the application of established policies and guidelines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and biological specimens.
  • Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to communicate effectively with clients, clinical staff and colleagues
  • Positive focus upon patient care within a hospital health care environment.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous

  quality improvement.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

Nil. While not Mandatory a relevant qualification such as a Certificate 3 or 4 in Phlebotomy would be well regarded.

  • This position requires the incumbent to participate in rosters that may include day shifts, weekends, public holidays and overtime as required. It is anticipated that service delivery will be continually optimised so there may be future changes to roster requirements.
  • A current “C” class licence.
  • Please detail any visa conditions you may have if you are not a permanent resident of Australia.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
