Northern Group is now actively seeking to recruit a highly organised individual to fulfil the role of Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality (SHEQ) Officer.


The Role


This role is based in our Ballinderry office but will require travel between all our sites. Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours per week but we are willing to be flexible for the right candidate.


As SHEQ Officer, you will drive a culture of a safe working environment and be responsible for health and safety standards throughout our business. 


You will ensure that we are legally compliant, develop and implement our health, safety, environmental and quality programmes and practices, and collaborate with the wider teams to ensure that these are fit for purpose and utilised effectively to achieve and maintain excellent standards for everyone connected with our business. 


On a day-to-day basis, this could include:


  • Develop, implement, and manage health and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, ISO standards and industry best practices.
  • Prepare and conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace.
  • Provide guidance and support to employees and management on safety-related matters, including training programs, hazard communication, and emergency response procedures.
  • Investigate and report on workplace accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and develop corrective action plans to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Maintain safety records and documentation, including incident reports, safety training records, and safety data sheets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety and drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Stay up to date with changes in health and safety regulations and industry trends and ensure that the company remains in compliance.
  • Manage the selection, maintenance, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
  • Conduct safety meetings and training sessions to educate employees on safety policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Assist in the development of emergency response plans and coordinate drills and exercises to ensure preparedness.


You will also be required to take on some HR responsibilities as part of your role.


The Candidate


Essential Criteria


The right candidate must have the following:


  • Health and Safety Qualification; NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a health and safety role within the past 5 years
  • Knowledge of health, safety and environmental standards
  • Be highly competent and capable of overseeing SHEQ across the entire business
  • Excellent skills in communication, presentation and collaboration
  • Effective time management skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • A full UK driving licence is essential


Desirable Criteria


  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety & Health
  • NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management
  • Previous HR experience
  • Internal auditor qualifications
