The Role and Hospital

The General Medicine Unit requires involvement in the on-call roster, outpatient clinics and wards. Key responsibilities of the role include review of patients presenting to the emergency department, management of inpatients and conducting outpatient clinics.

Liaison with general medicine colleagues and hospital staff specialists for collaboration on patient care is an essential facet of this role, as well as participation in departmental meetings and reviews as required. This service is a teaching hospital, and the role provides leadership and teaching for Doctors in Training and medical students.

This hospital providesa range of medical and surgical care to itspatients. With 32 dedicated bed units, three operating theatres, a 16-bed day unit, dialysis chairs and chemotherapy, palliative care and rehabilitation units, theyare well-placed to care for the diverse needs of our patients. Services are provided byVisiting Medical Officers, Registrars, Hospital Medical Officers, Interns, and a range of highly qualified nursing and Allied Health professionals.

Clinical Duties

Hours: Monday to Friday 0800 – 1700 (including public holidays)

• Provision of medical services to patients of this hospital
• Provide emergency services for patients as necessary according to the Physician on-call roster
• Consult on patients when requested by fellow medical officers
• Conduct ward rounds, outpatient clinics and post discharge clinics
• Develop and maintain policies for admission, discharge and care of medical patients, in consultation with other appropriate service deliverers
• Prompt and effective liaison with Hospital staff, GPs and external organisations as necessary
• Maintenance of complete and thorough medical records
• Participation in teaching of doctors in training and undergraduate medical students
• Provision of an outpatient consulting service within theirSpecialist Clinic.
• Active participation in continuing medical education, quality improvement and clinical review activities
• Collaborative involvement with other clinicians and managers in service improvement initiatives
• Initiation of research and development projects and quality assurance programs associated with the speciality service
• Participation in relevant Hospital meetings
• Preparation of statements and reports as necessary
• Participate in a review of competence, in consultation with senior practitioners and evaluation from peers and/or supervisors, sub-committee recommendations, or peer review
• Provide a satisfactory record of continuing education, sufficient to make the practitioner aware of major advances, complications, and other significant events in the speciality
• Provide such other clinical services as may be necessary and appropriate to the speciality

Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
