Department of Medical Physics

Section of Radiotherapy Physics

Two Radiotherapy Physicist Posts

Both Full Time: 37.5 hours per week

Both Band 7: £46,244-£53,789 per annum

Post 1 is a permanent appointment available immediately

Post 2 is a fixed-term 3-year contract from 1st October 2024 to 30th September 2027

NHS Grampian has an opportunity for two radiotherapy physicists to join our progressive and forward-thinking team. The successful candidates will be involved in: developing cutting-edge treatment techniques; teaching for the University of Aberdeen’s MSc in Medical Physics; undertaking research projects; and performing the full range of clinical and scientific activities required for the delivery of the routine Radiotherapy Service.

The Radiotherapy Department serves a catchment population of 630,000 people and is housed in modern purpose-built accommodation. Facilities include: a TrueBeam linear accelerator; two Ethos linear accelerators; a new Canon Aquilion Exceed CT scanner; an Aria patient information system; an Eclipse treatment planning system; and a GammaMedPlus HDR Brachytherapy Unit. The existing TrueBeam will be replaced in September with a new TrueBeam equipped with a 6-degrees-of-freedom couch and “HyperSight”, Varian’s advanced imaging system. The HDR unit will also be replaced in the financial year 2025/26.

The Department delivers SABR for all anatomical sites and it is a leading centre in Scotland for treatment of oligo-metastatic disease. In addition, we are one of only three centres worldwide that deliver CBCT-based on-line adaptive radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. On-line adaptive treatments for bladder and cervix cancer started in April this year. All radiotherapy treatments are delivered using VMAT or IMRT and an ‘Accelerated IMRT’ (AIM-RT) process is used to achieve same-day palliative treatments.

The department is research-active and has close ties with the University of Aberdeen. Current projects are focussed on developing and refining techniques for on-line adaptive radiotherapy and SABR. The successful candidates will participate fully in the department’s research activities.

This post requires a good Honours Degree in an appropriate physical science and a relevant postgraduate degree (MSc and/or PhD). Applicants would ideally be registered as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) but we will also consider candidates who are currently on an IPEM accredited clinical scientists’ training scheme or who have an MSc in Medical Physics from an IPEM accredited programme together with significant experience in radiotherapy physics. In that case, appointment would be at AfC band-6 until registration is achieved.

We encourage informal enquiries: please contact Dr John McLellan, [email protected] to get further details or, to apply on-line, go to https://apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk. The intended date for interviews is 25th June 2024.
