Workplace Safety Specialist - Term

Our Safety, Health & Wellness team within the People & Culture department is currently seeking two Workplace Safety Specialists to join their team of professionals. This is an ideal opportunity for a collaborative, self-directed individual who is curious about the intersection of physical, psychological and social well-being to effective workplace safety and health risk management. These are non permanent, term positions that are expected to run for approximately 2 ½ years.

Reporting to the OHS Manager, your overall responsibility will be to provide leadership, expertise, and assistance to workers, supervisors and managers across all departments in the daily execution of the City’s Safety Management System (SMS), and the Transportation Safety Management System (TSMS)

You will also play a critical role in the ongoing maturing of the Safey Management Programs while supporting stakeholders with regulatory compliance and effective daily engagement in the City’s SMS.

This position is evolving to meet the changing needs of the organization and will have enhanced coaching responsibilities to proactively educate and elevate behavior that supports and reinforces safety and well-being. Using your advanced coaching and influencing skills, you will establish a proactive, ongoing presence on work sites across the organization to build relationships; develop, enhance and implement SMS and TSMS programs; and support the resolution of safety-related behavior concerns, when they arise. You will have involvement in incident investigations and post-incident follow-up, that will include partnering with other organizational stakeholders to develop and implement strategies that turn issues into successful opportunities to learn and enhance the growth of the SMS and TSMS. This will include ongoing assessment of corrective actions and continued coaching, as well as completing regulatory documentation and reporting.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring across the City’s diverse workplace environments, the performance of the City’s SMS
  • Collaborating with department specific Committees, supervisors, and managers to prevent workplace injury and ill-health 
  • Assessing and facilitating the alignment of daily work practices to current hazard controls and safety expectations
  • Facilitating the organization’s readiness for an external audit of the SMS and TSMS; to provincial (COR / Alberta Transportation) or International standards (ISO)
  • Identifying, assessing and controlling vulnerabilities within the SMS and TSMS by applying a risk management mindset, and holistic injury prevention strategies
  • Conducting workplace inspections both indoors and outdoors
  • Communicating corporate changes in new technologies, procedures, processes for improving the effectiveness of the SMS and TSMS

Your professional background should include:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ of experience working in a Occupational Health and Safety or Commercial Vehicle Transportation Safety role.
  • Must be an AMHSA certified auditor or willing and able to obtain the certification
  • Must possess a minimum of a Class 5 Drivers license with reliable transportation
  • Management System development and implementation experience will be considered an asset.
  • Professional accreditation such as CRSP, CSP, NCSO, PMP or other professional designation will be considered an asset.

Other combination of education, experience and qualifications may be considered at the hiring managers discretion.

  • Successful relationship-building skills that are collaborative and supportive
  • Advanced coaching and influencing skills to proactively resolve issues and build strengths
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills
  • Independent judgement and initiative to proactively identify and respond to changing priorities
  • Concise and articulate verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Experience with COR, ISO, or Commercial Vehicle audit preparations and processes
  • Advanced organizational skills to self-manage workloads
  • Current certification in first-aid preferred
