Tell me more...The Indigenous Hospital Liaison Officer will collaborate with the multidisciplinary teams to ensure the provision of appropriate and culturally sensitive services to contribute to improved health outcomes and the reduction of health inequalities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Advocate for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people as a group and individually, in relation to their needs whilst patients within the TCHHS, to ensure culturally safe and appropriate health care and improved health outcomes for patients and their families.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and education to staff about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural values, beliefs, protocols and procedures to improve communication and understanding to affect improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families and caregivers.
  • Assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families in navigating the health care system by giving them priority, mobilizing community and family resources, helping them understand medical terminology and treatment options, and helping them with discharge planning.
  • Liaise between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients, staff, and other agencies to assist with effective communication for service provision to patients.

Requirements for the role:

  • To perform this role, it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.
  • Travel across the TCHHS may be a requirement of this position in commercial and/or light aircraft and 4WD vehicles.
  • Potential applicants are advised that the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000 requires Queensland Health to seek a ‘working with children check'; from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian prior to appointment to this position.
