About you: 

You are a qualified Medical Practitioner eligible for Provisional Fellowship as directed by ANZCA at date of commencement.  You have a high standard of practice in the speciality of Anaesthesia and related disciplines, with an interest in clinical education and simulation. You possess abilities as a clinical teacher at undergraduate and postgraduate medical level and are committed to participate in clinical audit to ensure the maintenance of high standards within the Department.

Your opportunity: 

The primary function of the position is to provide high quality clinical care to patients of Cairns Hospital and to participate in training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. The position may be required to provide clinical care to other hospitals within the district and adjoining districts, such as Atherton, Cooktown, Innisfail, Mareeba, Mossman, Thursday Island and Weipa Hospitals.

Your role: 

  • Under the supervision of the relevant Consultants, initiate, maintain and be responsible for the clinical care of patients.
  • Ensure all patients undergoing anaesthesia are adequately assessed and appropriately prepared prior to receiving anaesthesia services including documentation of a pre-operative assessment.
  • Supervise the day-to-day activities of more junior medical staff to ensure that appropriate standards of care are maintained and that the junior medical staff are trained to adequately fulfil their duties.
  • Conduct day-to-day review of patients.
  • Ensure comprehensive, accurate, and concise medical records are maintained for patients with an appropriate signed and dated legible entry in the patient's medical record on every attendance upon a patient. Where medical records are hand-written, the Medical Officer should also print his/her name under the signature.
