NHS Highland are currently looking to recruit a Clinical Fellow in General Medicine/Surgery at Lorn and Islands Hospital, Oban. The post will be fixed term for 1 year starting August 2024.  The opportunity for a 6–12-month post is available.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in hospital specialty in one of the NHS Highland Rural General Hospitals; Lorn & Islands in Oban.  You will gain wide experience in acute general medical/surgical/A/E presentations, working with consultant physicians, surgeons, Anaesthetists and Rural Emergency Physicians, in addition to in patient management. There may also be the opportunity to be involved in outpatient clinics.   The medical ward has a 4 bedded high dependency area. There is also one consultant radiologist - the Radiology department provides 24/7 CT scanning. There is an active hospital educational programme which you are encouraged to participate in. The hospital library has a full-time librarian.  The post of Clinical fellow will not attract training recognition from the Post graduate Dean but you will work alongside and receive similar experience to the other junior doctors in the hospital.

Oban is a wonderful town in which to live and work – it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and is close to the Highlands and a gateway to the Western Isles. It is well served by local amenities and just over two hours’ drive from Glasgow.

Successful candidates will have full registration with the GMC and hold a license to practice.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
