The successful candidate will undertake diagnostic testing and related duties following Pathology Queensland established accredited protocols and standards within a single or multidisciplinary team in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards. 

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in performing analytical and technical aspects of common analysis including delivery of scientific judgement in a multi discipline medium sized pathology laboratory.
  • Ability to work accurately and effectively in a multidisciplinary laboratory team with minimal/no supervision, including:
    • A demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise workloads according to clinical requirements.
    • A demonstrated ability to apply independent scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate.
    • A demonstrated ability to work independently towards logical solution of scientific and technical problems.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate accurately and concisely in either written or oral forms with medical and non-medical staff.
  • Demonstrate ability (or ability to acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ ISO accreditation / certification.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold at least a tertiary degree qualification in Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent) from a recognised university or tertiary institution.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/ manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
  • Whilst this position currently involves mainly day and evening shifts, you may be expected to participate in a continuous shift roster involving day, evening and overnight shifts if required, to meet operational requirements.
  • The candidate will be required to underake frequent manual handling, bending and lifting.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
