Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, Island Health

Program/department: Home & Community Care: Regional Resource for Adults with Disabilities Team; Rehabilitation Services, SLP

Location: Victoria Home and Community Care – Victoria, BC V8T 3P7 CA (Primary)

In accordance with the mission, vision, values and strategic direction of the Island Health, patient & staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at Island Health; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the team manager and under a co-leadership structure with communication assistance for youth and adults (CAYA) and working under the direction of the speech-language pathologist, the assistant implements rehabilitative treatment plans and client activities by administering routine procedures, documenting client progress, preparing appropriate client materials/activities, maintaining augmentative communication and other related equipment, and maintaining an inventory of supplies.

Travel will be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Island Health in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

Education, Training and Experience:
  • Completion of a formal Speech-Pathology Assistant Program at a recognized post-secondary institution plus one year’s recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with basic AAC technology and AAC software, specifically Boardmaker
  • Valid BC drivers license and operational motor vehicle
Skills And Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical abilities to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to provide client instruction under guidance of a Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related work equipment, including but not limited to computers, digital cameras, printers, and laminators.
