Job Title: Theatre Team Lead – Orthopaedic/SFA

Department: Main Theatres

Salary: £54,600 (with a Pay Award pending in April)

Hours: 37.5 Monday to Saturday, with on-call participation

Shift times: Early: 07:00-15:00 & Late: 13:00-21:00 x5 per week (longdays are unavailable)

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Theatre Team Leader and qualified Surgical First Assistant (SFA) specialising in Orthopaedic surgery to join our dynamic perioperative team. Reporting to the Theatre Manager, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering world-class surgical care, demonstrating leadership, clinical expertise, and a commitment to excellence.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert clinical assistance during a wide range of orthopaedic and spinal surgical procedures, including but not limited to: Elective orthopaedic procedures such as joint replacements (e.g., hip, knee, shoulder), Laparoscopic orthopaedic surgeries, Revisions of joints, and Major spine surgeries.
  • Act as the Surgical First Assistant (SFA), demonstrating advanced surgical skills and proficiency in complex orthopaedic-spinal techniques.
  • In addition to orthopaedic and spinal surgery, the Lead Theatre Practitioner should demonstrate proficiency in assisting across various surgical specialties, including but not limited to gynecology, general surgery, and urology.
  • Lead and coordinate the theatre team during surgeries, fostering effective communication and collaboration among team members.
  • Utilise strong organisational skills to prioritise workload and manage resources efficiently, ensuring the smooth running of surgical services.
  • Document all relevant information accurately and participate in quality improvement initiatives to uphold the highest standards of patient care and safety.


Essential Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with current registration.
  • Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of UK-based experience working at a senior level in a perioperative setting, with a proven track record of excellence in clinical practice and leadership.
  • Certification as a Surgical First Assistant (SFA).
  • Demonstrated expertise in surgical techniques, instrument handling, and tissue manipulation relevant to orthopaedic-spinal surgery.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
