The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine (DDHM) is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicantsfor a Staff Specialist vacancy.

Who are we?

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The DDHM is the state referral centre for diving emergencies and the only medical recompression facility in Tasmania.The state has a population of approximately 25,000 active divers of which 2,000 are professional. The hyperbaric facility conducts over 2,000 patient treatments annually (including for non-diving-related medical conditions) and manages approximately 20-30 cases of decompression illness and 60-80 acute non-decompression emergencies. The RHH hyperbaric facility has full critical care capability.

The Role

  • Provide services in hyperbaric medicine including diagnosis, treatment, and care for patients, both inpatient and outpatient, at the Royal Hobart Hospital, and where appropriate, other hospitals across Tasmania.
  • In consultation with other clinical services, assist with the management of Royal Hobart Hospital patients.
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.
  • Undertake research in hyperbaric medicine.
  • Participate in hospital committee and administrative matters as required by the Chief Executive Hospitals South, the Clinical Director for Surgical and Perioperative Services and/or the Director - Hyperbaric Medicine.

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiatedwith the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $210,000 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $288,000 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $291,472 - $301,349 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $27,535 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,000 pro rata per annum.
  • On call allowance % of Base Salary.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Other Benefits:

  • You will have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
  • You will also have access to accommodation and relocation costs.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term, part-time day work (with on-call), working 15.2 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible until 30 June 2026.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

  • Crimes of violence
  • Sex related offences
  • Serious drug offences
  • Crimes involving dishonesty
  • Disciplinary action in previous employment check
  • All applicants must be fit to dive as per Australian Standards AS/NZS 2299.1 or AS/NZS 4774.2.
  • Preference will be given to holders of the ANZCA Advanced Certificate in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine.
