Main duties of the job

An exciting 13 month secondment opportunity has arisen within the Paediatric Oncology Unit at University Hospital Southampton (UHS).

We are looking for a full-time band 6 nurse who wishes to build on their existing experience, clinical skills and leadership qualities on Piam Brown day unit.

Piam Brown Unit is the Principle Treatment Centre (PCT) for Paediatric Oncology in the South of England taking patients from Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight. We have 12 Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs) throughout the region.

The unit consists of a 12 bedded inpatient ward and adjoining day unit within Southampton Children’s Hospital. We care for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer from birth up to 16 years old who require Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (chemotherapy).

The day unit currently operates Monday to Friday 0800 – 1800 and works closely with the in-patient ward to ensure smooth patient movement through the unit. We also work very closely with our colleagues within the POSCUs across the region.

The unit is one of only 2 centres in the UK awarded the title of being a MASCC-Designated centre of excellence in Supportive Care in Cancer.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will need to have:
•    RSCN/RN Child Branch qualification.
•    Previous experience of working in Paediatric oncology.
•    You will need to be competent in the administration of intravenous therapy.
•    You will need to be competent in the administration of chemotherapy.
•    Competence in venesection & cannulation is desirable but not essential as training can be undertaken.

You will:
•    Participate in the checking and administration of intravenous drugs.
•    Participate in the checking and administration of intravenous chemotherapy.
•    Give and receive regular reports on the progress of patients, immediately acting on any changes in the patients’ condition, and reporting them to the relevant health care professional.
•    Work and liaise with medical staff and other members of the health care team locally & regionally to ensure that treatments are carried out within agreed policies.
•    Co-ordinate the running of the day unit alongside existing band 6 colleagues.

  • Registered Children’s Nurse on Part 1:Registered-Children
  • Evidence of on-going personal development
  • Educated to Level 6 or completing Degree. Or substantial evidence working at this level
Desirable criteria
  • Graduate
  • Specialist qualification
  • Recognised Teaching Qualification

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience in relevant speciality
  • Recent experience of acute/emergency nursing
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Understanding of personal accountability.
  • Logical and consistent work and career pattern.
  • Child Protection and Domestic Violence Awareness.
  • IT Skills
  • Undertaken chemotherapy administration competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice. Provide evidence of  Supporting a range of learners in practice  Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Varied acute clinical placements
  • Proven management experience
  • APLS/EPLS trained
  • Experience as an NMC sign off mentor or clinical practice assessor

  • Experience of budgetary control
  • Evidence of developing interpersonal skills

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible. UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
