We have an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Manager to join our Health and Safety Department based in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for assisting in developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety programs to ensure safe and healthy working environments for our people, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and stake holder needs. They will collaborate with various departments nationally to foster a culture of safety, open communication and ultimately support our commitment to the well-being of our people and contractors.

 

Key Responsibilities


  • Work with the Health and Safety Director to develop, review, and update the management system and health and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with current legislation and industry best practices. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
  • Communicate policies effectively to all employees and stakeholders. Work with our Communications Department to develop regular safety notices and bulletins.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments of workplace and site activities and processes to identify hazards. Work with Managers to develop strategies to mitigate risks and assist to implement controls and maintain records.
  • Stay abreast of relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, stakeholder, and industry standards and ensure the organisation's compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Monitor and review the organisations minimum training requirement and its compliance. Provide ongoing education to raise awareness of safety issues and promote a culture of safety. Work closely with departments and contractors to ensure training is recorded and reviewed regularly.
  • Work with the Health and Safety Director and Department Managers to undertake investigations into accidents and incidents. Identify root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Promote the use and understanding of our health and safety software. Provide ongoing education to raise awareness and promote uptake of online safety management. Assist in the further development of templates and system.
  • Maintain and develop systems for monitoring and reporting key health and safety performance indicators. Prepare regular reports for management on safety metrics, incidents, and trends.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of the workplace to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. As a national organisation the need to both collaborate online and travel to our sites and premises across the country is key.
  • Attend health and safety meetings with customers to listen to concerns, provide assurance and promote our business and best practice.
  • Work with our facilities department and managers across the country to monitor emergency preparedness plans and drills and develop systems and education opportunities.

 

Person Specification


  • Previous experience in a similar role, ideally in the construction or engineering sector.
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulation.
  • Ability to complete full cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act).
  • Well organised with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Excellent IT, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a good track record of building rapport with all levels across the business and externally.
  • Self-motivated with a positive and pro-active attitude.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to personal development within the role.
  • A passion for the protection of people’s health and safety and in promoting positive values and culture.
  • A keen interest in the business.

 

Qualifications


  • Professional certification in health and safety (e.g. NEBOSH Certificate).
  • A recognised professional membership (e.g. IOSH) would be desirable.
  • CSCS desirable.
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Driving licence (as the role will require travel to offices and sites across the country).

 

Working Hours


  • 9:00am to 5:30pm Monday to Thursday, and 9:00am to 5:00pm on Friday (with a one-hour lunch break each day).
