Cad Rail Industries Ltd was founded in 1968 headquartered in Montreal. We take pride on being North America’s leader of full-service solutions in the freight, passenger and commuter rail industries in Canada, the United States and offshore. Cad Rail has other facilities in Calgary, Lethbridge (under Caltrax banner) and has recently been selected by the ONxpress Transportation Partners association to provide all legacy fleet maintenance services for the Metrolinx rail fleet of approximately 1000 bi-level coaches and 90 locomotives. Cad rail’s delivery team will operate and maintain Metrolinx’s rail maintenance facilities in Etobicoke and Whitby, as well as in multiple overnight along with mid-day light servicing facilities located across the Metrolinx train service area.
Summary of the role:
The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for providing strategic and technical guidance on key programs related to occupational health and hygiene, coordinating with maintenance personnel and supervisors related to program implementation and training, and conducting and managing occupational hygiene exposure assessments. The role coordinates with field personnel and supervisors related to program implementation and training as well as conducting and managing occupational health exposure assessments. The incumbent has some authority to make decisions on a project-by-project basis as decisions made by the position impact the health and safety of CAD Rail Fleet Services employees as well as regulatory compliance. The role conducts site visits, inspections, and monitors worker exposure in addition to performing exposure assessments (e.g., noise, ergonomic, silica, indoor air quality, etc.). In addition, the industrial hygienist coordinates sampling initiatives and supports departments with industrial hygiene components associated with hazardous materials abatement projects.
The Industrial Hygienist reports to the Senior Manager Safety and Compliance and has no supervisory responsibility.
Core Accountabilities:
Advise on and support the development and implementation of industrial hygiene programs for CAD Rail Fleet Services
Develop, maintain and continuously improve on industrial hygiene programs and processes
Collaborate with other CAD departments (e.g., HR, Engineering, Maintenance) for employee outreach, program initiatives, and new project developments
Conduct industrial hygiene assessments, identify trends, and recommend initiatives to reduce exposures
Participate in collaborative Health and Safety Executive (HSE) internal audits
Act as a technical resource and support to each of our facilities
Respond to, direct and advise on actions to address employee exposure situations or concerns
Develop and update industrial hygiene-related content for training initiatives (e.g., hearing conservation, respiratory protection, biological hazards)
Participate in exposure investigation processes and support the identification and implementation of follow-up action plans
Liaise with HR for active working medical and claims
Working Conditions
The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday with occasional shift work on evenings and weekends. The role requires regular travel across the Metrolinx network. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.
