Corporate Occupational Health and Safety Advisor

Overview:


The Occupational Health and Safety Advisor will provide support for the major infrastructure projects, conducting owner oversight activities.

This position conducts hazard and risk assessments for employees that work on project sites and provides a quality assurance role on the Prime Contractor by performing on-site safety observations, and spot audits of the project’s Design-Builder and its contracted firms.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Implements TI Corp’s Occupational Health and Safety Management Plan, ensuring that Project and contractor plans incorporate corporate goals, objectives, and priorities.
  • Provides health and safety advice and guidance on OHS legislation, corporate policies, procedures and best practices, and contractual requirements.
  • Conducts health and safety risk assessments for each phase of the Project, documented on the Risk Register.
  • Conducts initial and ongoing safety meetings with contractors to set expectations and requirements.
  • Ensures pre-job hazard assessments are conducted with each contractor of the Project.
  • Conducts regular health and safety audits and monitoring of Project work site(s).
  • Reviews the Prime Contractor’s safety and emergency response plans, policies and procedures, incident reports, investigation reports, WorkSafeBC correspondence and Notice of Project.
  • Provides the Prime Contractor with recommended preventative/corrective actions when regulatory or contractual non-compliances are noted.
  • Completes monthly health and safety reports for corporate and executive review.
  • Ensures corporate and Project stakeholders are informed of Project safety issues, hazards and/or deficiencies that may affect Project timeline, company reputation, or Project budget.
  • Issues ‘stop work orders’ where there is an imminent threat to the life, health and safety of others.
  • Conducts and/or participates in incident/accident investigations.
  • Act as the Project’s representative for health and safety matters on Project work site(s).
  • Provides safety training to the Project team.
  • Maintains records to support due diligence, recommendations, decisions and actions.


Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and considerable experience conducting safety inspections, audits and investigations or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations, policies and practices.
  • Understanding of safety issues and risks of large infrastructure Projects (preferably in heavy civil construction and transportation projects).
  • Experience acting as an owner representative and interacting with Prime Contractors, Sub-Contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to audit an occupational health and safety system.
  • Ability to promote safe and effective work practices and, prevent or minimize risks.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of security screening will be required as a condition of employment with TI Corp.

  • Work will require travel to construction sites; driver’s license (Class 5) required.
