The successful candidate will perform general laboratory duties including receipt of specimens, registration of specimens, setup of microbiology samples and referral of specimens to other laboratories.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated experience or ability to acquire experience in the correct procedures of specimen collection/phlebotomy including the application of established policies and guidelines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of the importance of standard precautions in dealing with patients and biological specimens.
  • Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to communicate effectively with clients, clinical staff and colleagues
  • Positive focus upon patient care within a hospital health care environment.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work accurately and give attention to detail.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • In some circumstances and following consultation, Queensland Health staff may be required to participate in 24 hour shift or on-call arrangements.
  • Certificate III in Pathology is not mandatory but would be highly regarded
  • Please detail any visa conditions you may have if you are not a permanent resident of Australia.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e., one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
