The role
Queensland health is seeking a visionary and dynamic Chief Dental Officer to lead and oversee our dental health services. As the Chief Dental Officer you will play a crucial role in shaping and implementing dental health policies, ensuring high standards of clinical practice, and improving oral health outcomes across the state. You will work collaboratively with other health professionals, government agencies, and stakeholders to promote and integrate dental health within the broader public health framework. 

Reporting to the Deputy Director-General, The Chief Dental Officer, provides leadership in the strategic direction for public oral health services and works to build capacity and sustainability for oral health services that lead to improved oral health for Queenslanders.

  •  Direct and be accountable for the management, functioning and outcomes of the Office of the Chief Dental Officer
  • Utilise high level strategic, analytical, and innovative skills to lead the development and review of oral health policy in Queensland and to contribute to the development and reform of oral health policy nationally.
  • Monitor the achievement by Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) of agreed accountabilities, targets and outcomes against allocated resources for oral health services using strategic monitoring systems including feedback to HHSs and the Deputy Director-General, Clinical Excellence Queensland.
  • Lead and influence ethical decision making, quality improvement, standards monitoring and integrated risk management in clinical services and professional workforce skills.
  • Lead processes to ensure appropriate ongoing reporting and review of Queensland's contribution to the National Oral Health Plan.
  • Foster partnerships with consumer groups, senior clinicians / managers, professional bodies and the private and non-government sector for the advancement of health outcomes.
  • Develop and manage links with academic institutions to foster research opportunities and evidence-based practice.

The successful person
You will have: 

  • High level expertise in public health policy and demonstrated knowledge of contemporary oral health service provision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary health management issues in relation to oral health services.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively influence the development and implementation of complex state and national reforms.
  • Post graduate qualifications in public health or public sector management, would be highly regarded.

Mandatory requirements

  • Eligibility for registration as a Dentist with the Dental Board of Australia is mandatory.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/ manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
  • This position requires the incumbent to travel frequently by air and road. A current “C” class driver licence is essential.
