Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Operating Room department at Bulkley Valley District Hospital.

Reporting to the Head Nurse, the Operating Room nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care and nursing practice activities within the framework of quality management and in accordance with the Bulkley Valley District Hospital policies and accepted standards.

AORN Perioperative Nursing Program Details

Northern Health Regional Operating Room Education (RORE)


The American Operating Room Nurse’s (AORN) Periop-101 course is a blended learning program that delivers standardized education on the foundational skills of perioperative nursing. The program includes a 7-week course using a blended learning approach and a practicum paired with a preceptor to consolidate skills. The course and practicum will prepare nurses to provide safe and competent perioperative nursing care at a novice level.

• There are 1 training positions available for 2023/2024
• Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
• Learners should expect to make a 6 – 12 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
• Additional study time, outside of schedule hours, may be required to successfully complete the program
• Flexibility for practicums is necessary
• Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
• Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing
applicable to the education program.
• Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and
training will be provided

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days - 08:00 to 16:00

Bulkley Valley District Hospital is a 24-bed Acute Care facility,
which integrates home and community care into one facility. Some of the services include:
• Emergency/outpatient

• Radiology (X-ray, Mammography, Ultrasound)

Smithers Smithers is located in the picturesque Bulkley Valley surrounded by three mountain ranges which provide a backdrop for the town’s Alpine setting. The main industries include forestry, tourism, transportation and agriculture. Smithers offers affordable housing and natural splendor that support a balanced lifestyle. The population of Smithers is approximately 6,000, with an additional 5,000 from the surrounding communities that access services. There are three elementary schools, one secondary school, one alternate format school for grades 9-12 and Coast Mountain College. Qualifications

• Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.

Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to organize assigned workload and set priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts including coworkers, physicians, community agencies representatives,
• patients, and families.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
