Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be supporting the team to review and evolve clinical practices and pathways of care. The post holder will have a pivotal role within the Anaesthetic service, working collaboratively with their team leaders, their band 6 colleagues, Matron and Anaesthetist Clinical Leads.

We are looking for applicants with experience of caring for patients throughout their operative journey, as well as experience of managing staff, budget management experience and involvement with change projects. You should be energetic, forward thinking and demonstrate sound innovative styles & skills in an evolving environment. Excellent communication, decision making, and motivation skills are key qualities to possess. You will need to demonstrate CPD & a strong commitment to developing others whilst understanding how to improve and provide safe, quality patient care. 

1. To act as patient advocate and to maintain high standards of patient care ensuring that patient objectives are achieved using a systematic approach to patient care.

2. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care, providing support to other members
of the multidisciplinary team.

3. To liaise with all patients and their relatives and ensure that they are kept informed of treatment
and progress and to participate in the provision of advice and support.

4. To promote evidence-based practice and to take an active part in any relevant research/audits
being undertaken planning and initiating changes to enhance patient care.

5. To ensure compliance with Infection Control standards, in line with Trust policy.

6. To maintain accurate records of observation, treatment and care, teaching and monitoring others
as necessary

7. To provide clinical leadership to theatre teams

8. To participate in the induction/in-service training of staff who are in their supernumerary period.

9. To train and supervise junior staff in collaboration with the Education and Training Team

10. To participate in the Continuous Assessment of Practice for pre/post registration course members and the assessment of competencies.

11. To act as facilitator for trained members of staff undertaking professional development programmes as necessary.

12. To participate in the ordering, checking and administration of prescribed drugs and other
substances in accordance with Trust and local Policies.

13. To assist in carrying out the transfer of a patient during the perioperative care within or external
to the department, giving concise accurate handover.

14. To adhere to the NMC/ HCPC Code of Conduct and Trust policies and procedures

15. To act as a positive role model, demonstrating sound clinical judgement whilst giving advice to
other professionals within their own scope of practice.

16. Ensure all medical equipment is functional, reporting any faults or potential hazards to senior staff and arranging for replacements as necessary.

17. To monitor the provision of resources and equipment and ensure that discrepancies are rectified, with due regard to cost effectiveness and efficiency of the service

18. To arrange the care of patient's property, with their permission, in accordance with policies and within the limitations of hospital responsibilities

19. Be familiar with and lead the action plan in the event of a major incident alert or exercise.

20. Appropriately responds to emergencies or untoward situations in the workplace. Actively debriefing teams following situations and advise further counselling if necessary. 

21. With appropriate experience and training, work flexibly across specialities. 

22. To inform the person in charge of any untoward incidents, complaints or problems affecting staff/ patients/ relatives and visitors. 

23. To act up in the absence of an appropriate manager. 

24. To act as pastoral team lead completing annual appraisal and giving support on a daily basis

Person specification

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse or Registered ODP
  • Experience as a Theatre Practitioner in an acute theatre unit
  • Awareness of professional regulations in the NHS
  • Leadership Experience
  • Clinical anaesthetic and theatre skills and experience – generic and speciality-specific
  • Provide evidence of supporting/ managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Good communication skills with ability to provide complex information in intense setting
  • Foundation Management Course or equivalent
Desirable criteria

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
