Job overview

This is a full time replacement post to support specialist teams at Bristol Dental Hospital.

The post holder would be the Lead Consultant for Dental Radiology and based at Bristol Dental Hospital liaising with the subspecialty dentists including orthognathics, restorative dentistry, paediatric and oral medicine and surgery and support the maxillofacial service. They will work closely with the dental specialties at the dental Hospital as well as the Head and Neck Radiology team based at the BRI. The majority neck ultrasound is carried out at the dental hospital (7-8 lists a week) and there is a good working relationship between the Dental radiologist and Head and Neck radiologists.

The post holder will support the dental radiographers in vetting and protocolling CBCT and oversee the CT and plain film reporting. They will have a key role in neck USS carrying out 2 lists a week including biopsies and be available for urgent scans from Primary Care.

There is also scope to be involved in other aspects of head and neck radiology for the correct candidate.

The post holder will have 2 dedicated teaching sessions based at Bristol dental school

Main duties of the job

At the Dental School, the post holder will provide expert radiological support to the dental and radiography staff. Duties will include:

· Overseeing the teaching of dental radiography and radiology to undergraduate students of dentistry, dental therapy, and possibly on postgraduate courses

· Reviewing and reporting dental radiographs where clinician is unsure about image appearances.

· Reporting on small volume Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scans if requested by the clinician, and on all CBCT scans showing anatomy outside of the dento-alveolar region.

· Providing advice to clinicians and radiographers on appropriate imaging parameters for Cone Beam CT

· Reviewing and, if justified, authorising imaging referrals outside of standard dental school protocol.

· Supporting the radiography staff in quality assurance activities outside of their scope of practice, including periodic audit of clinicians' and students' reports of radiographic image findings.

There is an onsite dental radiology service with 5 dental radiographers and support staff with 3 dental xray rooms and a cone beam CT scanner as well as a dedicated ultrasound room and further portable USS machine and separate reporting area.

 

 

· Providing, if required, reports on radiographs of patients referred to Bristol Dental Hospital or other treatment centres.
