About your opportunity:

Fixed term temporary full-time / 12 months / Location: Townsville

Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.

The service will be provided through a First Nation Nurse Navigator and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Worker led model. The service aims to strengthen partnerships with local and regional General Practitioners, as well as primary and community care networks to improve outcomes for patients and deliver effective integrated care.

The primary purpose of this position is to facilitate effective, coordinated and culturally capable health care for First Nation patients, their families, and carers by following up in the community and linking in with appropriate services depending on patient needs.

The ideal candidate will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following: 

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of First Nation cultures, protocols, and history, as well as demonstrated experience in engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication and consultation skills, including demonstrated ability to:
  • Liaise and negotiate with First Nation communities and health professionals in the Townsville Hospital and Health Service for the development, planning and implementation of culturally capable health services.
  • Provide health education and support to the patients of the health services.
  • Advocate and mediate on behalf of First Nations patients, carers and families using culturally effective strategies.
  • Demonstrated work cross-culturally with non-indigenous professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of or ability to acquire knowledge of relevant medical terminology.
  • Demonstrate ability to plan, co-ordinate and implement access pathways for First Nation health programs including the ability to network with key stakeholders to achieve program objectives.

  • Generous remuneration package value up to $80,851 p.a. comprising:
  • Salary range of $2786.60 to $3099.00 p.f. (HWF3)
  • 4 weeks annual leave with 17.5% loading
  • 12.75% employer contribution to superannuation.

Requirements:

  • Appointment, and future increment progression, between pay points HWF3.1 to HWF3.5 requires:
    • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health
  • Appointment, and future increment progression, between pay points HWF3.2 to HWF3.7, or HWF3.8 (limited to employees who meet requirements of HED 04/23 requires):
    • Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  • Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration is preferred but not required.
  • Blue Card Checks required.
  • This is a Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) risk role.
  • Possession of class C drivers' licence.
  • Probation period may apply.
  • Pre-employment checks will be conducted.
