Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for a 10 PA, fixed term, 12 month Locum Consultant post in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at University Hospital Southampton to commence in August 2024. 

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest Trusts in England providing a wide range of regional and supra-regional specialist clinical services.  In partnership with the University of Southampton the post offers opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and for research. 

The integrated Department of Infection comprises services in Medical Microbiology, Medical Virology, inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases, Infection Prevention & Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship, OPAT and diagnostic laboratory services in Microbiology and Virology .  UHS hosts the only inpatient ID service in the region and is the designated lead Trust for infection diagnostics for the regional pathology network - Southern Counties Pathology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities 

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

·         Inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases (ID) activity

·         Clinical Microbiology including participating in the Consultant duty Microbiologist weekly rota and Antimicrobial Stewardship activity

·         Participation in the ID Clinical and Radiology MDTs

·         Participation in the Microbiology out of hours on-call rota (1 in 8) 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

·         MBBS or equivalent

·         MRCP or equivalent

·         FRCPath or equivalent

Full GMC registration

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Individuals wishing to apply must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). 

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD
  • Prizes/Distinctions
  • Significant publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Within 6 months or CCT in Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology (dual CCT accreditation)

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge of working within the NHS
  • Managing inpatients with suspected and confirmed Infectious diseases
  • Providing Microbiology advice to Trust based clinical teams and health care staff in the community
  • Microbiology results interpretation and authorisation and close working with Microbiology Laboratory staff
  • Participation in audit and clinical governance activity
  • Evidence of teaching skills
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of clinical experience in a tertiary centre
  • Evidence of service improvement

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible. UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
