Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse to join the Wessex neurological centre as an Epilepsy nurse specialist.  This is an opportunity for a nurse with a good knowledge of epilepsy to join our established team working closely with the neurological Consultants in Southampton. The post holder will be involved in the care of patients managed with medication and those undergoing neurosurgical treatments at both Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth and University Hospital Southampton sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Band 6 Specialist Nurse is responsible for the provision of specialist nursing care for a defined patient/client group, practicing as a core member of the multi-disciplinary team. Duties will include but not restricted to:

•    Provide specialist nursing skills, knowledge and expertise to patients and their families/carers affected by epilepsy.
•    Work as a core member of the multi-disciplinary team and at times liaising and acting as a specialist resource across multi-agency specialities.
•    At times be required to work autonomously and therefore we are looking for someone who already has these skills or the confidence to develop these skills
•    Be required to take telephone help line messages and triage patient queries offering support and advice respective to seizure management or on-going care.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
  • Degree qualification, 120 credits at L6 or possess an equivalent knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant specialist training, experience or portfolio
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
  • Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice or evidence assessed to be of equivalent experience, demonstrating support to a range of learners in practice. Provide evidence of both supporting a range of learners in practice and supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Extensive post registration experience within specialist area
  • Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service.
  • Understanding of personal accountability

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible. UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
