Main duties of the job

YOUR MAIN DUTIES

Applications are invited for an Advanced Endoscopist and Consultant luminal gastroenterologist. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent communication skills, and a passion for delivering high quality care.

We provide a high-quality care in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy including a number of specialist tertiary level services:

- Supraregional luminal therapeutic endoscopy

- Supraregional IF and IBD services

- The JAG accredited 7 room Endoscopy Unit provides the full range of diagnostic and complex therapeutic procedures including a dedicated GA room.

- GI physiology unit with comprehensive upper and lower GI motility services

- Liver and HPB medicine

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities 

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

A full-time (10 PA) consultant post is available to support the Advance Endoscopy and Gastroenterology service. The successful applicant will:

- weekday/weekend endoscopy including therapeutic endoscopy (not ERCP) according to current skills of applicants

- Mentoring can be tailor made according to candidates current endoscopic level

- contribute to inpatient care (6-13 weeks annually, negotiable)

- undertake clinics

-1 PA for clinical administration

Applicant may be required to deliver a small proportion of endoscopy or clinics at partner hospitals (e.g. Lymington, Royal South Hants).

Trust IT systems can support delivery of offsite flexible working, including telephone clinics/admin tasks.

The trust fully supports those applicants wishing to work less than full time or compressed hours.

You will join the existing team of 15 luminal gastroenterology and 6 hepatology consultants and work flexibly to support the delivery of care for in- and out-patients. You will undertake luminal gastroenterology outpatients, conduct inpatient ward rounds, and perform high quality diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy lists.  

You will be supported by dedicated teams of nurse specialists, admin staff, and GI dieticians.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council. Those trained in the UK must have evidence of Higher Speciality Training leading to a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Gastroenterology or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English. Applicants should possess a minimum of provisional JAG accreditation for both gastroscopy and colonoscopy.                   

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Individuals wishing to apply must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). 

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Within 6 months or CCT in Gastroenterology
  • Within 6 months or CCT in General Medicine
  • MD or PhD
  • Prizes/Distinctions
  • Significant publications in peer reviewed journals

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge of working within the NHS
  • Managing elective and emergencies in gastroenterology
  • Provisional JAG accreditation in gastroscopy and colonoscopy
  • Participation in audit and clinical governance activity
  • Evidence of tertiary level experience
  • Evidence of subspecialist advanced endoscopic luminal GI expertise
  • Evidence of teaching skills
Desirable criteria
  • Full JAG accreditation in gastroscopy and colonoscopy
  • Evidence of small bowel endoscopy- Capsule/Double balloon enteroscopy
  • Evidence of service improvement

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
