Main duties of the job

Are you a registered pharmacy technician looking for a new challenge and a chance to expand your knowledge and experience working at ward level? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician to join our dynamic, forward thinking team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking to recruit a band 5 pharmacy technician however would also consider a band 4 pharmacy technician looking for professional development opportunities to advance toward band 5. We are open to consider flexible working hours, secondment opportunities and part time hours if required.

Any suitable band 4 applicants will be recruited into a developmental band 4 pharmacy technician post whereby you will be given support and training in order to complete set competencies in order to become a band 5 pharmacy technician. The expected timeframe to undertake and complete relevant competencies is between 6 months to a year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

You will be a key member of a range of teams across the department and the hospital, supporting busy wards and clinical areas, working closely with a range of health care professionals and our extensive Pharmacist team.  Your work will include:

•    Initiating the Medicines Reconciliation process. 
•    Ensuring  patients have sufficient supplies of medicines for their hospital stay and beyond.
•    Counselling and educating patients on their medicines
•    Playing an important and proactive role in the discharge process to facilitate safe and effective discharge. 
•    Extended hours and weekend working to support patient care
•    Co-ordinating the dispensary workflow
•    Dispensing, Labelling & Final checking of prescriptions
•    Providing Controlled Drug service
•    Managing stock effectively
•    Training Staff
As part of this, we will provide training towards the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) course, so that the final check of prescriptions can be undertaken. 
What we’re looking for
 
•    Registered pharmacy technician in UK by GPhC 
•    Hospital pharmacy experience desirable 
•    Demonstrates being able to organise their and others workload and prioritise effectively
•    Experience of JAC or similar computer labelling/ordering system
•    Work weekends, late nights and bank holidays as per rota
•    Demonstrate times when able to work effectively under pressure
•    Able to use initiative, but know their own limitations
•    Polite and friendly
•    Punctual

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Registered pharmacy technician in UK by GPhC
  • Numerate and literate e.g. GCSE in Maths and English A* to C or equivalent
  • One of the following additional pharmacy qualifications – Accredited Checking PT (ACPT) Pre and In Processing Checking (PIPC) medicine management accreditation, TAQA assessor, CIPS level 4, foundation management or equivalent demonstrable experience of day to day operational management of staff.
  • Experience of staff management/operational workload supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of Practice supervisor programme or equivalent.
  • Additional pharmacy qualifications e.g.Completed APTUK Foundation Framework Foundation management or other recognised management qualification or demonstrable management experience

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Registered pharmacy technician in UK by GPhC
  • Numerate and literate e.g. GCSE in Maths and English A* to C or equivalent
  • Dealing with customers/patients
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital pharmacy experience
  • Stock control/ordering experience
  • Experience of JAC or similar computer labelling/ordering system
  • Experience relevant to role applied for e.g.Providing a ward based medicines management service , Clinical Trials or research experience, Aseptic services experience

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible. UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
