As a team member diligently apply a range of routine and specialised histological and cytological procedures to surgical and autopsy specimens to examine pathological features essential for diagnosis and applying independent scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate.

The Scientist in Anatomical Pathology reports to the Supervising Scientist of Anatomical Pathology and Senior Scientist of Anatomical Pathology and works coherently within smaller and wider Anatomical Pathology crew of scientists, technicians, and other Pathology Assistants.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge, expertise, skills, scientific judgement, and initiative in the delivery of service within the Anatomical Pathology Department including Routine Histology, Immunohistochemistry, Histochemistry, Cytology preparation and Tissue Dissection.
  • Demonstrated ability and expertise to participate in a single-discipline and/or multidisciplinary team such as Anatomical Pathology Service and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to speciality areas within Anatomical Pathology.
  • Demonstrated ability and initiative to provide scientific advice in a client focused manner.
  • Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation / certification.

 Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold at least a relevant tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in medical laboratory science from a recognised university or tertiary institution
  • The successful candidate will be able to time manage and prioritse while working accurately in a fast paced work environment.
  • Candidates must be able to participate in a roster system, including overtime as required.
  • Current Laboratory hours fall between 0600-1800 Monday to Friday and rostered emergency call duties.
