75252Upper Gastrointestinal & General Surgeon - 21 hours per fortnightFractional / Fixed Term (Parental Leave cover 11 June 2024 – 24 December 2024)The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services, as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient, and community programs. We are a designated state-wide provider for services including trauma, and we lead centres of excellence for tertiary services in several key specialties including neurosciences, nephrology, oncology, cardiology, and virtual health. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.The Hepatobiliary and Upper Gastrointestinal Unit provides a specialist surgical service treating benign and malignant conditions of the liver, pancreas, biliary tree, spleen, adrenals, oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. The unit also has a focus on acute and trauma surgery. The unit has ten surgeons with the following subspecialty focus: 5 HPB, 3 UGI, and 2 acute/trauma surgery. Non-consultant staff include an HPB fellow (ANZHPBA accredited), UGI fellow (employed at Peter Mac, works across the Parkville precinct), SET trainee/registrar, unaccredited registrar, two interns, and a liaison nurse.Our surgeons are highly trained and skilled specialists, who collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide excellent and individualised care. We hold weekly Multidisciplinary Meetings to plan management for all malignant and complex benign cases. We are a teaching unit and take pride and care in training future surgeons and junior doctors who pursue non-surgical careers. We are an academic unit, running research studies, clinical trials and quality improvement projects. We provide surgical leadership at city, state, and national levels. We advocate for patients and the healthcare system in Victoria through leadership, educational programs, and representation roles. We adhere to the values of our organisation, which includes prioritising care for members of the team.The Role:Clinical duties include fortnightly clinic (Monday AM), fortnightly operating session (Tuesday PM), and endoscopy session every 4 weeks (Friday AM); On call for the HPB-UGI Unit is 1:7 weeks which includes weekend ward rounds for all unit patients when on call; potential for participation in Emergency General Surgery roster (e.g., annual leave cover)Work as a member of the Hepatobiliary & Upper GI Unit to provide high quality patient care and education and participate in quality improvement and researchParticipate in the full range of UGI and General Surgery activities commensurate with a Tertiary Referral Centre and level one Trauma CentreWork with members of the HPB-UGI Unit to assess and ensure patient outcomes and experiences are in line with national and international benchmarksWork with partner units to provide high quality elective and acute care for HPB-UGI patientsAbout You:Registration with (or eligible for registration) with the Medical Board of AustraliaAppropriate health professional tertiary qualification/sWell-developed communication, negotiation, and presentation skillsCommitment to live the Melbourne Way - putting people first, leading with kindness and achieving excellence together.Interested?Find out more about The Royal Melbourne Hospital  you have any questions or require more information, connect with us.
