The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of General Medicine is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for Staff Specialist – General Medicine vacancies.

We seek experienced and enthusiastic Staff Specialists passionate about practicing holistic general medicine, teaching and mentoring junior medical staff, and contributing to quality improvement in a growing general medicine department.

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. We strive to provide excellent inpatient and ambulatory care to the 250,000-strong population of southern Tasmania.

General medicine is the largest inpatient department in the hospital with excellent subspecialty support and opportunities for clinicians to be involved in research, clinical redesign, and quality improvement. Staff specialists are actively involved in the training of basic and advanced physician trainees and the supervision of international medical graduates. This is an excellent opportunity to become part of an evolving department and contribute to positive change in the Tasmanian health system.

The Role
  • You will have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in General and Acute Medicine.
  • Contribute to the provision of high-quality inpatient and outpatient care to public and private patients of the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) in General Medicine.
  • Contribute to the Department of General Medicine’s afterhours and weekend roster.
  • Provide professional leadership to medical, nursing, and allied health staff and foster interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Be actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as trainee and IMG supervision and mentoring
  • Be involved in research and undertake quality improvement activities.
  • Actively support and participate in service development to improve current services and develop new services in the Department of General Medicine.

Medical Practitioners (Public Sector Award)

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $210,000 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $288,000 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $291,472 - $301,349 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours for at least three years) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $27,535 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,000 per annum pro rata.
  • On call allowance % of Base Salary.
  • Superannuation of 11%.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And, subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Other Benefits:

  • You will have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.
  • You will also have access to accommodation and relocation costs.

Details of Appointment

Multiple permanent and fixed term, part time and full time day work (with on-call) positions available, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
