The Role

Under the direction of the Human Resources Director, the Health and Safety Representative will be responsible for promoting safety attitudes, safe work practices and environments as well as manage, maintain and administer Frind Winery Ltd.’s health and safety program with the objective of minimizing accidents, injuries and environmental and equipment damage.

This role will primarily work out of our winery, 3725 Boucherie Road, West Kelowna, with regular travel between sites across the Okanagan from Vernon and Osoyoos.


Responsibilities

  • Manage, maintain and administer Frind Winery Ltd.’s health and safety program across our business operation, including but not limited to: Hospitality, Production, Vineyards, etc
  • Participate in projects and activities to enhance organizational performance and promote and support a culture of safety
  • Act as the first point-of-contact for safety inquiries and incidents and promptly deal with complaints relating to the health and safety of workers
  • Recommend improvements of the occupational health and safety, and the occupational environment of workers
  • Recommend educational programs promoting the health and safety of workers and compliance with the OHS provisions of the Workers Compensation Act and the regulations, and monitor their effectiveness
  • Advise the employer on programs and policies required under the regulations for the workplace, and to monitor their effectiveness
  • Provide guidance, advice and assistance to managers, supervisors and workers on a variety of matters including safety of workers, job procedures, property and equipment.
  • Relay required safety information to all new hires
  • Perform risk assessments to eliminate or reduce hazardous effects on workers, the environment and equipment
  • Conduct and document inspections and regular site visits to verify compliance with corporate policies and health and safety regulations
  • Identify corrective action to be taken when unsafe acts are identified during an inspection process; assist in resolving any issues of non-compliance; and provide education to site personnel in matters of health and safety
  • Participate and support employees and contractors in conducting effective incident investigations that identify underlying causes and effective corrective measures
  • Ensure all required documentation is effectively organized and copies are shared with the appropriate groups
  • File required accident/ incident reports accordingly
  • Review incident reports, monthly statistics, inspection reports and can identify undesirable trends and provide appropriate recommendations
  • Work with departmental management on the development/implementation of specific safety plans, job hazard assessments, safe work procedures and rectify any deficiencies
  • Organize legislative and other H&S training and guidance for managers, supervisors, JHSC members, and workers on a variety of safety topics such as safety orientation, regulations, WHMIS, accident and injury prevention, confined space, fall protection, emergency response, safe work practices, first aid, etc.
  • Lead the Joint Health & Safety Committee, attending regular committee meetings as the trained Worker Safety Representative, provide advice and assistance to the committee, present relevant safety information, and document and distribute meeting minutes
  • Implement and maintain safety-related training tracking and scheduling monitoring for expiry
  • Assist and provide guidance on return-to-work plans for occupational and non-occupational illness and injuries
  • Liaise with applicable regulatory agencies such as WorkSafe BC regarding occupational illness and injury claims and exchange information, advice and coordinate activities
  • Act as a subject matter expert on a variety of safety related topics and keep current on changes in best practices and legislative changes
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements

  • Must be legally eligible to work, and reside in Canada
  • Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), or currently in process
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience leading safety initiatives
  • Certificate or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or other combination of education and experience may be considered
  • First aid, CPR, and any other relevant medical certification and training
  • Joint Committee Member Training
  • Class 5 driver’s licence for the purpose of regularly travelling between sites across the Okanagan between Vernon and Osoyoos
  • Sound knowledge of safety program/policy design, review, and evaluation.
  • Experience with conducting risk assessments, teaching first aid, and ensuring legal compliance are ideal
  • Experience in hospitality, agriculture and/or food and beverage manufacturing an asset but not required
  • Must have an understanding of relevant health and safety regulations and guidelines
  • Sound judgement and decision-making skills
  • Excellent technical report writing ability and written communication skills to write and evaluate safety programs and manuals
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills to liaise internally and externally for the purpose of exchanging information and providing guidance on policies and programs
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with all levels across the organization
  • Solid analytical skills to interpret legislation and convert into relevant safety programs and problem-solving skills
  • Strong administrative skills along with the ability to maintain and report accurate data
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to exercise good judgement
  • Comfortable, multi-tasking, working under pressure, and managing timelines
  • Comfortable working independently
