Occupational Therapist - Full Time Probationary 1.0 FTE

We are seeking a licensed occupational therapist to join our team at Red Deer Regional Catholic Schools.

This position will provide occupational therapy and treatment to students with special needs within educational programs.

The successful candidate will be responsible to provide and support individuals with complex sensory-motor integrative dysfunction.

The successful candidate will be responsible to conduct occupational therapy assessments to determine a student’s level of functioning relative to their age and educational placement in such areas as fine/gross motor skill development, sensory-motor integration, self-care, and the activities of daily living. This includes ongoing support and treatment of Sensory Processing, Executive Functioning, Behaviour/Regulation, Mental Health, Multiple Complex Disabilities.

Education and Certifications:

A bachelor's or master's degree in occupational therapy or equivalent from an accredited University Program. Registered member with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT) and current professional liability insurance.

  • Previous school-based collaborative work considered an asset.

  • Previous experience with sensory rooms and complex learners.

  • Successful applicants will be required to submit before the start date:

    • Current Criminal Record Check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)

    • Access to a vehicle and able to provide a clean driver abstract upon request

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Must possess knowledge in sensory integration dysfunction and all aspects of a sensory integration room in a school setting.

  • Relevant expertise in the design, implementation, and evaluation of a sensory room and in devising specific programs for individual students.

  • Experience in the use of a sensory room and linking to specific learning goals and success criteria, regularly evaluated to assess the effectiveness of the student’s progress and documented in the student’s ISP.

  • Provides occupational therapy services, as identified through the ISP plan, to students enrolled in the Foundations/Blended programs of Red Deer Regional Catholic Schools.

  • Administers occupational therapy assessments to determine a student’s level of functioning relative to their age and educational placement in such areas as fine/gross motor skill development, sensory-motor integration, self-care, and the activities of daily living.

  • Writes assessment reports identifying the student’s needs and proposed treatment strategies; writes individual student goals and objectives as part of the ISP; maintains progress records; participates in the ISP meeting.

  • Develops occupational treatment plans and goals for rehabilitative care to improve student functional abilities and enhance their ability to learn.

  • Provides students with individual treatment and group therapy sessions to correct specific areas of sensory-motor integrative dysfunction.

  • Develops occupational therapy treatment plans based on the educational goals for eligible students to improve the student’s functional abilities within the school and naturalistic settings, in collaboration with the ISP team.

  • Monitors therapy programs and consults with educational staff regarding inclusion of appropriate occupational therapy treatment strategies into the educational program; evaluates the efficacy of the established program and makes modifications within the framework of the ISP process as necessary.

  • Participates in meetings between RDCRS staff and families on the appropriate implementation of programs;

  • collaborates and coordinates occupational therapy goals with the educational program.

  • Demonstrates educational and developmental strategies to students and families for successful home intervention of perceptual, motor, and sensory programs.

  • Provides interpretation and summaries of assessment reports to families; recommends appropriate activities and materials designed to support motor goals in the home.

  • Consults and collaborates with medical and community agencies that interact with RDCRS staff regarding

  • occupational therapy services for students.

  • Adapts equipment to assure proper positioning and to enhance the functional performance of the student, addressing the student’s neuromuscular deficits and needs. This may include the design and fabrication of equipment or recommendations for the purchase of adaptive equipment as needed.

  • Consults with other members of the educational team regarding the mandated and best practice roles of occupational therapists.

  • Administers occupational therapy programs as needed in terms of budget recommendations, space, and equipment recommendations.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Provides universal, targeted, and individualized supports and services.

  • Supports the Child and Family Centered approach to the delivery of services that views the whole family including the child as the focus

  • Engages parents as active partners at home and in planning and decision making

  • Provides a flexible approach to service delivery adjusting to the diverse and changing needs of the child and family

  • Provides consultative supports and services that promote academic and social inclusion

  • Supports and develops a strength-based model of services

  • Promotes mental health and wellness

  • Delivers specialized services that include: sensory/self-regulation, visual perceptual skills, physical skills, organizational skills, and life skills

  • Promotes engagement and participation in literacy and numeracy by reducing barriers to learning

  • Delivers support and services in a geographic area that serves the areas of Blackfalds to Olds and Red Deer to Rocky Mountain House.
