Role responsibilities

  • Participation in a structured Clinical Coding education program that covers all specialties.
  • Analysis of medical record content for hospital inpatient episodes and abstraction of diagnoses, procedures, external causes of injury and poisoning using ICD-10-AM and the Australian Coding Standards.
  • Develop a thorough working knowledge of clinical coding under the guidance of experienced Coders with the aim of meeting competency expectations with overall achievement of 85% accuracy.
  • Use appropriate software to facilitate code assignment and enter coded data into the Patient Administration System.
  • Participate in group education and continue self-education to improve knowledge and clinical coding skills.
  • Promote the recording of comprehensive clinical documentation for clinical coding by identifying insufficient documentation and initiating Coding Queries to clinicians.
  • Promote the coder/clinician relationship and accurate data collection by participating in meetings with multi-disciplinary staff.

Employment Term

  • Fixed Term Temporary full-time, up to 12 months

Generous remuneration package value up to $94,810 p.a.comprising:

  • Salary rates between $2864.10 - $3185.10 p.f. (AO3)
  • Annual leave with 17.5% loading
  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution

Role requirements

  • Whilst not mandatory, this role will suit applicants who have completed, a recognised Clinical Coding course.

The ideal applicant will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following: 

  • Possession of a sound knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-AM, ACHI and Australian Coding Standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new tasks and undertake tasks requiring high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team, prioritise allocated work and be flexible in changing work environments.
  • Possession of sound interpersonal skills to liaise with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Possession of a high standard of general administrative skills, including computer skills.
