About the Role
Reporting to the Lead Laboratory Technologist III, the primary purpose of this position is to perform all the functions of a Laboratory Technologist I as well as provide lead direction over the chemistry division of the clinical laboratory at the Labrador Health Centre, reporting directly to the Lead Medical Laboratory Technologist III.
Qualifications:
" Successful completion, and graduation from High School;
" Must have trained as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at an approved and accredited Medical Laboratory Science training program;
" Must be a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS);
" Must be registered with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP);
" Must be experienced in using the Clinical Meditech Modules - Laboratory Information System, and the Hospital Information System;
" Must have good communications, and interpersonal skills, and be able to answer questions from staff, and other stakeholders concerning procedures and processes in the Chemistry Department.
" Must have successfully completed, or be willing to undertake in a timeline set by the employer, the Quality Systems Certificate (Parts 1, 2 and 3 Courses) with the CSMLS;
" Must have 2 years working experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist 1 in Chemistry Department in the last 4 years;
" Must have successfully completed or be willing to undertake in a timeline set by the employer, Chemistry and other relevant courses with the CSMLS;
" Must be willing to undergo additional and ongoing training in timeline required by employer;
" The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory Certificate of Conduct.
Duties: (Included but not limited to)
" Provide guidance to physicians, nurses, laboratory technologist, laboratory assistants and other healthcare professionals on proper sample collection procedures;
" Recognize any abnormal findings, determine the need for further testing and respond according to laboratory guidelines;
" Comply with legislation governing medical laboratory technology and apply these to the practice of the profession;
" Provide for the health care needs of the public, keeping the welfare and confidentiality of the patients paramount at all times, and respecting the dignity, values, privacy, and beliefs of the individual;
" Monitor quality assurance on a daily and weekly basis;
" Be responsible for calibration and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment;
" Monitor the availability of reagents and supplies and ordering supplies as necessary;
" Participate in an external quality assurance program (IQMH & CAP);
" Practice according to established procedures and protocols, safety guidelines and existing legislation as per WHIMIS (workplace hazard materials information system);
" Label, date, store and dispose of samples, chemicals, stains, reagents and solutions according to established procedures and protocols;
" Work with hazardous materials appropriately (e.g. blood and body fluids); decontaminate all contaminated material prior to disposal;
" Provides supervision to laboratory staff, in Chemistry, which includes the following classifications: Medical Laboratory Assistant, and Laboratory Technologist I;
" Provides orientation, instruction and supervision to laboratory technologists, laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, medical students and new staff;
" Provides orientation, instruction and supervision to medical laboratory technology students during their clinical rotation in Chemistry.
" Registering patient data, entering physician request, entering and verifying patient result in the laboratory information system;
" Protects the confidentiality of patient information and abides by the rules and regulations of the Labrador-Grenfell Health Region as reflected in its mission, policies and procedures;
" Safety is a priority for Labrador Grenfell Health. All Staff are responsible to ensure that safety for patients, clients, co-workers and themselves is paramount in the workplace
" Perform other related duties as required.
Salary:
" LX-29 of the NAPE-LX salary scales, $33.74 to $42.80 per hour plus the applicable Labrador Allowance
Hours of Work:
" 70 hours biweekly, days, evening and weekend shifts required, in addition to standby and call back duties.
