About the roles

Clinical Education
This position involves a 50% clinical and a 50% education component.

Clinical Anaesthesia (50%) - Provisional Fellow clinical role provides the opportunity to broaden experience, delivering high quality anaesthetic care in a tertiary surgical referral centre for both adult and paediatric patients, from both urban and rural populations. The fellow will transition to supervisory roles and gain first on-call experience in a supportive environment. Both the Townsville University Hospital and Mater Hospital Townsville (private) offer differing perspectives and sub-specialty exposure of interest can be negotiated across the two sites.

Medical Education (50%) - Provisional Fellow will provide teaching to medical students from the James Cook University School of Medicine and Dentistry. Supervision and teaching of junior staff, including anaesthetic and other speciality trainees, resident staff and medical students is part of the daily responsibilities of the Clinical Education Fellow.  In addition, there is opportunity to undertake further qualification with James Cook University offering a subsidised place on their Graduate Certificate of Health Professional Education.

Ultrasound
Involves a general clinical component and a component designed to develop knowledge and skills in ultrasound. The specific composition of the ultrasound component can be negotiated to suit the individual's requirements. This is expected to include developing knowledge and skills in transthoracic echo, regional anaesthesia, vascular access and other perioperative uses of ultrasound. The general clinical component will be structured to facilitate transition from registrar to consultant roles with rostering as the senior anaesthetist on lists and some duty anaesthetist and first on-call exposure.

General
Provides the opportunity to broaden their experience delivering high quality anaesthetic care in a tertiary surgical referral centre for both adult and paediatric patients, from both urban and rural populations.  The Townsville University Hospital delivers sub-specialty surgical services including general Surgery (colorectal, upper GI, breast, endocrine and hepato-biliary), orthopaedic (adult and paediatric, trauma), neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, tertiary obstetrics and gynaecology surgery (including materno-foeto medicine), ENT, ophthalmology and maxillofacial surgery.  Non-surgical supported services include cardiology (EPS, structural interventions and TAVI), endoscopy, bronchoscopy and EBUS, ECT, medical imaging (including DSA and interventional neuroradiology) and perioperative medicine.
 
Trauma
Develop specialised knowledge and skills in inpatient trauma care particularly as it relates to anaesthesia. This position involves a general clinical component and a component designed to develop knowledge and skills in trauma management. The specific composition of the trauma component can be negotiated to suit the individual's requirements. This is expected to include being attached to the hospital trauma service and participating in trauma service rounds, patient management and research, as well as attending trauma calls in ED, and working in the trauma theatre. 

Role requirements

  • Medical degree
  • Medical Registration with AHPRA
  • Accepted into the recognised vocational college training program relevant to anaesthetics and successful completion of the Part 2 FANZCA exam.
  • Provisional Fellow - Ultrasound also requires enrolment in a suitable ultrasound course.
