Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton is seeking a talented and dedicated pharmacist to join our esteemed team as a Surgery and Nutrition Pharmacist. As a leading academic medical centre, we are committed to providing exceptional patient care, conducting ground-breaking research, and educating the next generation of healthcare professionals. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on patient outcomes in the fields of surgery and nutrition.

 We are a tertiary centre for complex surgeries and intestinal failure, providing treatment for patients across the south of England. The NSIFT manage patients with complex gut disorders affecting their nutrition and fluid status, who require parenteral nutrition (PN) and fluids in hospital and at home. Extended pharmacist roles, including independent prescribing supported. Part time roles considered.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Your Responsibilities:
You will work closely with the surgical/nutrition clinical pharmacy teams and multidisciplinary Nutrition Support and Intestinal Failure Team (NSIFT) which includes Consultant Gastroenterologists, specialist nurses and dietitians. You will be given the opportunity to be involved in the innovation and development of pharmacy services to the NSIF and Surgical pharmacy service, including: 
• Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure safe and effective medication management for surgical patients, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. 
• Conduct medication reconciliation and develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the multi disciplinary team. 
• Monitor patient responses to pharmacotherapy, provide dosage adjustments, and manage drug interactions or adverse events. 
• Support surgical nutrition services by providing pharmaceutical expertise,including parenteral and enteral nutrition support. 
• Participate in research activities related to surgical pharmacotherapy and nutrition and quality improvement initiatives. 
• Educate and train healthcare professionals,including physicians, nurses, and pharmacy students, on best practices in surgical pharmacotherapy and nutrition. 

You will be supported by experienced senior members of the team and given the opportunity to develop advanced level skills. 
What we’re looking for: 
• A pharmacist with a passion for clinical pharmacy who is eager to learn and progress their career. 
• Ability to communicate well, inspire confidence and work well both independently and as part of a team.
• Sound clinical knowledge and experience in delivering a ward based clinical pharmacy service 
• Completed or working towards a post-graduate education in clinical pharmacy (completion due 2024). 
• Good organisational and problem-solving skills. 
• Previous experience of parenteral nutrition would be advantageous but is not essential.

  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Registered with General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience
  • Can demonstrate Advanced Stage 1 competencies in the RPS Advanced Pharmacy Framework in relation to medical or surgical patients
  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Leadership qualification or experience
  • Sound knowledge of clinical pharmacy services acquired while working within a suitable specialty.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
